A fire alarm panel showing a fault is telling you that part of the system is not working as it was designed to. It is not a fire signal, and it is not something to leave until the next service visit. The correct response sits between those two, and it is straightforward: find out what the panel is reporting, write it down, and get a competent engineer to it.
This guide explains what a fault indication on a fire alarm panel generally means, what causes most of them, and what to have ready when you call. It is organised by make, because that is how people describe the problem on the phone. Very few callers open with a category of fault. They open with "the Kentec panel is showing a fault" or "the C-TEC panel keeps buzzing".
One thing this guide deliberately does not do is publish fault codes, reset sequences or step-by-step diagnostics for named panels. There is a section below explaining why. In short: fire detection is life safety equipment, what an indication means depends on the panel model and on how the system was configured when it was commissioned, and a generic instruction found online is a poor substitute for someone who can see the panel. Fault and Fire Are Not the Same Signal
Every fire alarm control panel installed to BS 5839-1 distinguishes a fire condition from a fault condition, and indicates them differently.
- A fire condition is the system doing its job. Sounders operate, the panel indicates the zone or the device in alarm, and the building should be evacuated in line with your fire procedure.
- A fault condition means the panel has found a problem with itself, with the wiring, with a device, or with its power supply. Sounders do not operate. The panel gives a separate fault indication, conventionally amber or yellow rather than red, usually with an intermittent internal buzzer.
The practical difference is that a fault is a warning about capability rather than an emergency in itself. It says the system may not respond correctly to a real fire, in whole or in part. That is exactly why a fault is urgent even though nothing dramatic is happening in the building.
Silencing the Buzzer Is Not Fixing the Fault
Most fault calls begin with the noise. Panels sound an internal buzzer on a fault precisely so that somebody notices, and most panels let an authorised user silence that buzzer at the panel.
Two things follow, and both matter.
- Silencing the buzzer does not clear the fault. The fault indication remains, the panel keeps the condition recorded, and whatever is wrong is still wrong.
- Silencing it and then forgetting it is the failure we see most often. An engineer arrives for a routine six-monthly service and finds a fault that has been sitting there, quietly, for weeks. For all of that time the building did not have the system its occupants believed it had.
Silence it so that people can work. Then record it in the fire alarm logbook and report it the same day.
What Actually Causes Most Fire Alarm Faults
Across every make, the large majority of fault conditions fall into a handful of categories. Naming them is useful, because it gives you a sense of what kind of visit is likely without pretending to diagnose your particular panel from a distance.
Power supply faults
A fire alarm panel runs from the mains and holds a standby battery so that the system survives a power cut. A fault here can mean the mains supply has been lost, that the charging circuit has a problem, or that the batteries are no longer holding charge. Standby batteries are consumable items with a service life, and are replaced periodically as part of maintenance. A battery fault appearing some years after installation is entirely ordinary rather than a sign that anything was installed badly.
Cabling and circuit faults
Detection and sounder circuits are monitored continuously, which is the point of them, so a break, a short circuit or a deteriorating connection is reported as a fault. In practice a great many of these are caused by building work: a cable cut by another trade, a suspended ceiling taken down, a device knocked off its base by a ladder. If anything at all has been done to the fabric of the building recently, tell us when you call. It very often shortens the visit.
Device faults
An individual detector, manual call point, sounder or interface can fail, become contaminated with dust, or drift outside tolerance as it ages. On an addressable system the panel can normally point to the specific device. On a conventional system it points to the zone, and the engineer narrows it down on site.
Earth faults
An earth fault means some part of the wiring has made unintended contact with earth. These are worth mentioning separately because they can be intermittent and are often the slowest to trace, sometimes appearing and clearing with changes in temperature or moisture.
System and configuration faults
Panels monitor themselves as well as the field wiring. A fault can relate to internal electronics, to a networked panel or repeater that has stopped communicating, or to a device the panel expects to find on a loop and cannot.
What to Do When a Fault Appears
The right first move is to gather information, not to intervene. Please do not open the panel, attempt a repair, isolate sounders or disconnect devices. Those are engineer tasks on life safety equipment, and on a monitored system some of them will generate signals of their own.
What genuinely helps:
- Read the make off the front of the panel. It is almost always printed on the fascia.
- Record what the panel is displaying, word for word, or photograph it. If there is a screen, the exact wording matters. If there are indicator lights, which are lit, and whether they are steady or flashing, matters.
- Note when it started and whether it is constant or comes and goes.
- Note what changed. Building work, a power cut, a leak, a delivery that clipped a detector, any recent alteration to the system.
- Enter it in the fire alarm logbook with the date, the time and what you saw.
- Consider whether interim measures are needed. If the fault means a significant part of the building is without detection, the responsible person should consider temporary arrangements until it is put right.
Then call us. With those details we can usually tell you on the phone what class of fault it looks like and what the visit is likely to involve.
Fault by Make
Below is what we do for each of the makes we support, and what to have ready when you call about it. This is deliberately kept at make level. What a given indication means, and what is needed to clear it, depend on the panel model and on how your system was configured at commissioning, so we confirm that on the phone rather than guess at it in an article. In every case, the useful things to have to hand are the same: the make from the fascia, exactly what is being displayed, and any zone or device reference the panel gives.
Kentec panel fault
Kentec is a British manufacturer of fire alarm control panels, supplying both conventional and addressable equipment widely used in UK commercial premises. We install, service, repair and take over Kentec systems. If your panel has a display, the wording on it is the single most useful thing you can give us before we attend.
Advanced panel fault
Advanced is a British manufacturer of fire alarm control panels, particularly associated with addressable and networked systems across larger and multi-building sites. We install, service, repair and take over Advanced systems. On a networked installation, tell us which panel or repeater is showing the fault as well as what it says, because that distinction can change what we bring.
C-TEC panel fault
C-TEC is a British manufacturer of fire alarm control panels and related life safety equipment. We install, service, repair and take over C-TEC systems.
Gent panel fault
Gent is an established fire detection brand supplying addressable fire systems through an approved installer network. Our position on Gent is different from the other makes on this page, and we would rather be straight about it than have you find out on the day. We service, maintain, fault find and take over Gent systems, and we do not install new Gent systems. If you have a Gent panel showing a fault, call us and we will attend it under service. If you are specifying a brand new system for a new building, we will quote you on a make we install.
Haes panel fault
Haes is a British manufacturer of fire alarm control panels covering conventional and addressable systems. We install, service, repair and take over Haes systems.
Fike panel fault
Fike supplies fire detection equipment and is also known in fire suppression. We install, service, repair and take over Fike fire alarm systems. If your premises has suppression as well as detection, say so when you call, because the two are frequently interfaced and a fault on one can present at the other.
Zeta panel fault
Zeta is a British supplier of fire alarm panels and detection devices. We install, service, repair and take over Zeta systems.
EMS wireless fire alarm fault
EMS supplies wireless and hybrid fire detection systems, where devices communicate with the panel by radio rather than over a cable. We install, service, repair and take over EMS systems. Faults on wireless systems have a category of their own: as well as the usual power and device faults, the panel monitors the radio link to each device, so a fault can indicate a device that has stopped reporting. Changes to the building that alter the radio path, such as a new partition or a metal-clad structure, are worth mentioning when you call.
EDA Zerio Plus fault
EDA Zerio Plus is a wireless fire detection range that we install, service, repair and take over. The same point about wireless applies: the panel monitors the link to each device, and physical changes to the building can affect it.
SmartCell fault
SmartCell is a wireless fire detection range that we install, service, repair and take over. As with the other wireless systems, tell us whether the fault names a particular device and whether anything about the building layout has changed.
Apollo detector fault
Apollo is a British manufacturer of fire detection devices: detectors, manual call points and interfaces rather than control panels. That means an Apollo fault will be reported to you by whatever control panel your building has, which may be a different make entirely. When you call, give us the make of the panel as well as the device, because the panel is where we start.
Hochiki detector fault
Hochiki manufactures fire detection devices, and these are the products we support under this make. As with Apollo, the fault will be indicated at your control panel, so tell us the panel make alongside the device reference.
Why We Do Not Publish Fault Codes
You will find pages online offering lists of fault codes and reset procedures for named fire alarm panels. We have chosen not to add to them, and the reasoning is worth setting out, because it is not evasiveness.
A fire alarm panel is life safety equipment. The meaning of an indication varies between models within the same manufacturer's range, and the behaviour of any particular installation also depends on how it was programmed at commissioning: how zones were configured, what interfaces exist, what cause and effect was set. A published instruction that is right for one panel can be wrong for the panel in front of you, and acting on it can silence, disable or misconfigure detection that people rely on. It can also invalidate the commissioning position, which matters if you are ever asked to evidence that the system was maintained properly.
There is also a plainer point. Clearing the indication is not the same as fixing the fault. A procedure that makes a light go out without addressing the cause leaves you with a building that looks compliant and is not.
So where this guide would benefit from model-level detail, we say so and ask you to call. We will confirm what your panel is reporting on the phone, and we will tell you honestly whether it needs an engineer that day or can wait for a scheduled visit.
Where You Stand While a Fault Is Showing
For non-domestic premises, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 puts the duty on the responsible person to keep fire safety measures in efficient working order and in good repair. A fire alarm system sitting in fault is, by definition, not in efficient working order.
BS 5839-1 supports that with a maintenance regime: servicing by a competent person at intervals not exceeding six months, a weekly user test, and a logbook recording tests, faults and remedial action. The logbook entry matters more than people expect. It is the record that shows a fault was identified and acted on rather than ignored, and it is what a fire officer, an insurer or an incoming managing agent will ask to see.
None of that means a fault puts you automatically in breach. It means the clock starts when the fault appears, and what you do next is what will be judged.
Reducing the Number of Faults You Get
Some faults are simply the system telling you a component has reached the end of its life, and no amount of care prevents them. Others are avoidable, and these three make the largest difference:
- Do the weekly test. It takes a couple of minutes and it surfaces problems while they are small.
- Keep servicing to the six-monthly cycle. Batteries, contaminated detectors and marginal connections are found at service visits, before they become a callout.
- Tell contractors the fire alarm is there. A meaningful share of the circuit faults we attend were caused by another trade working near cabling or devices without knowing what they were near. A note in the site induction costs nothing.
