Basildon is a planned new town, and that shapes the security work more than anything else about the area. It was designated in January 1949 under the New Towns Act 1946, the eighth new town to be created, absorbing the existing settlements of Laindon, Pitsea and Vange into a single designated area of roughly 8,000 acres. The Development Corporation began building in 1951, with the first homes going up at Vange and Fryerns. The consequence is a housing stock dominated by planned estates built between the 1950s and the 1970s, using a limited number of standardised house types laid out in neighbourhood units.
