Barking's housing splits into four clear periods, and the period usually decides what an installation involves. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Longbridge Road and the streets near Barking Abbey have solid masonry walls, original window openings, and side returns that give a concealed route to the rear. Interwar and post-war semi-detached and terraced housing makes up much of the rest of IG11, generally with easier cable routes and more open frontages. The Gascoigne estate has been progressively rebuilt over the past decade into higher-density blocks with shared entrances and communal corridors. Barking Riverside, built out on the former power station land to the south and served by its own Overground station since 2022, is planned at around 10,800 homes and is almost entirely apartment stock with controlled entry and managed communal space. What We Are Usually Asked to Do in Barking

Three requirements come up repeatedly across IG11. The first is intruder alarm work in the older terraced and semi-detached stock, where wireless systems are usually preferred because owners do not want cabling chased through finished plasterwork, and where the side return and the rear kitchen door are the points that need covering rather than the front elevation. The second is door entry and access control for blocks with a shared street door, which is the standard arrangement across the rebuilt Gascoigne phases and the Barking Riverside apartments.
